After two days of inactivity in the NHL following a minor trade between the Lightning and the Ducks on Friday, the NHL rumor mill is back in full effect today. Philadelphia Flyers: It's no secret that Ron Hextall is looking to make some major changes
“We’re not looking for a short-term fix,” Hextall said. “We’re looking for today and tomorrow but also for the future. So, we’re not going to do something short-term that’s going to hurt us down the road. In saying that, if something is there that makes sense, we’re certainly going to look at it. There’s been more talk lately [with other teams], but nothing that makes sense for us at this point.”Eklund of HockeyBuzz is reporting that the Flyers are now dangling Sean Couturier as trade bait, it would be a tough pill to swallow for Flyers fans who know that Couturier is already one of the best two way forwards in the NHL, and has nothing but upside. However if Hextall is able to get rid of one of the Flyers killer contracts, like that of recently unhappy Vincent Lecavalier, it appears he may be open to the move. Ottawa Senators: Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun is reporting that the Senators will be forced to make a roster move if they are unable to finalize a trade for Marc Methot prior to his expected return to his line up this week. Garrioch believes that if the Methot move is not made the Senators will look to move defenseman Patrick Weircioch, who multiple teams have expressed interest in. Including the Oilers, Flyers, Sharks and Red Wings. Chicago Blackhawks: The Blackhawks are one of the teams keeping a close eye on the value of the Canadian dollar. If the rumors regarding the salary cap seeing no or minimal increase next season are true the Blackhawks may find themselves in tough scenario. The Blackhawks have $66 million tied up into just 15 players, it doesn't take a cap genius to figure out that a $69 million dollar cap with that kind of salary would create a situation that could see multiple players shipped out of town, something Stan Bowman is very much aware of:
“Obviously, if the cap doesn’t go up and we keep the exact same team, no, that wouldn’t work,” Bowman said. “You get into all of these hypotheticals, ‘Well, if you keep this guy, that means you can’t keep that guy.’That means we may see players on the move that would have previously caused cries of blasphemy to be shouted from the streets of Chicago. Names like Patrick Sharp, Bryan Bickell and even Brent Seabrook. Bowman stands firm in his decisions to invest heavily in his stars, and given his success it's hard to argue.
“The one thing that trumps everything is you need great players on your team, and great players make a lot of money,” Bowman said. “I would much rather be in the position where you’ve got them and you’re trying to make your cap work than to not have them, and then you’re trying to figure things out and trying to say, ‘How do we get good players?’That's your Monday rumor round up!
