It was a tremendous comeback night for Stephen Weiss, one that not only had an impact on him, but seemed infectious to the team around him. Weiss admitted before the game that he was just happy to be in the line up against the Senators. Mike Babcock had made him a healthy scratch earlier in the season, and he was once again coming off injury concerns. And despite playing a position that was unfamiliar to him, the 13 year NHL veteran made the best of it, and one could argue he was the difference between winning and losing last night. Weiss spoke about playing out of position to the media following the game:
“It’s still a little strange, there’s no doubt about it I’ve got some work to do on the boards and stuff like that. But when you play with these types of players it doesn’t make it that hard. Helmer has a lot of speed and makes up for my mistakes, and I thought Jurco  played really well and it was fun.”
Weiss wasn't the only one who enjoyed his comeback performance, as stated earlier the success of Weiss seemed almost infectious, head coach Mike Babcock was both happy with his production and his impact on the players around him:
“It’s amazing. All the guys are extremely happy for him,” coach Mike Babcock said. “He’s been struggling with injuries so it’s great to have him back in the lineup and he was extremely effective for us. It was good to see.”
Weiss knows that one game isn't going to define his career as a Red Wing, he knows that he has failed to meet expectations and that's probably why the relief was so evident on his face after last nights second goal. Weiss knows he will have to keep working hard, and he hopes this is just the start of a road back to success.
“It’s been a tough go here,” he said. “It’s not what I envisioned when I came here two summers ago. But you can’t control these types of things, other than just wanting to stick it out with the injury last year and not wanting to come out of the lineup, I probably screwed myself over a little bit, and paid the price for it. But hopefully this snowballs in my direction.”
Weiss now has 4 goals in his past three games when you count his performances in Grand Rapids, it will be interesting to see if this is the start of a turn around for the oft maligned veteran. Here's a video of both his goals courtesy of the NHL.
