EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an update to our earlier reported story on Vancouver Canucks prospect Jack Rathbone and and what appeared to be a serious spinal injury that he suffered last night in the Abbotsford Canucks' win over the Bakersfield Condors.

Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal is reporting that Rathbone has been released from the hospital and is reportedly in good health.

For our earlier published report from yesterday evening, read below.

Vancouver Canucks top prospect Jack Rathbone has suffered an apparent serious injury tonight in an AHL game between his Abbotsford Canucks and the host Bakersfield Condors.

The incident occurred midway through the 3rd period with the Canucks leading 2-1 and with Rathbone himself having already put up two assists on the evening. The 22 year old Rathbone went behind his own team's net to retrieve the puck, when forechecking Condors forward Colton Sceviour hit Rathbone from behind into the end boards.

He lay there prone for nearly 15 minutes before he was taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Here's the hit in question:

Rathbone reportedly gave a "thumbs up" as he was stretchered off the ice, but the team has yet to provide an update on his immediate health and his injury status.

I suspect that he'll spend the evening in hospital under doctor supervision until we hear any kind of update from the team.

Sceviour was given a five-minute major for boarding, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct. But, to me in real-time it didn't appear that there was a call on the play. But, after the officials convened to discuss the hit they elected to penalize Sceviour for the blatant hit from behind.

Rathbone has five goals and 16 assists in 19 games with Abbotsford this season and looked to be on the cusp of an NHL call-up before tonight's injury. In fact, Vancouver head coach Bruce Boudreau had spoken glowingly to the media this week about Rathbone's play in the AHL and how he planned to get him into some NHL games. Obviously, that's all up in the air now as we await news on the severity of Rathbone's injuries.
