Another controversial goal from the Avs after they score on a “gloveless” Mike Smith

Midway through the third period of Game 2 of the Western Conference Final and things aren't looking so hot for the Edmonton Oilers.
After a period in which it looked like Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mike Smith may have found his groove again, the groove dropped. In fact, the entire band came screeching to a halt as Smith allowed three quick goals in just two minutes and 44 seconds to give the Colorado Avalanche a 3-0 lead in Game 2.

That's three goals on three consecutive shots. Yeesh...
To make matters worse though the Avs would go up 4-0 late in the 3rd period scoring on a "gloveless" Smith.
After making a windmill type glove save, Smith's catcher flew right off his left hand while officials allowed play to continue. Avs superstar Nathan MacKinnon managed to get a shot off before Smith could get his mitt back on though.

How is that allowed? Play should be blown dead in my opinion. I understand that goalies could abuse that rule, so maybe leave it up to the referee's discretion to administer a delay of game penalty if they believe a goaltender is abusing the rule. Thoughts?
