Avalanche confirm captain Gabriel Landeskog will be out for a while.
An update on Landeskog.
The Colorado Avalanche will be without their captain for the next little while.
On Saturday the Colorado Avalanche officially confirmed that Landeskog's injury will keep him out of the lineup for the foreseeable future when head coach Jared Bednar confirmed that the captain would be out for the next two weeks. It's a tough break for the Avalanche who have been somewhat snakebitten when it comes to injuries and ailments this season, but on the bright side 2 weeks is a relatively manageable time frame all things considered.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman even joked that the Avalanche may have angered the hockey gods in some form or fashion given their troubles as of late.
Combined with the injuries to center Nazem Kadri and defenseman Bo Byram this will require Bednar to shuffle his lineup a little bit, and it is perhaps for that reason that he did not provide an update in that regard. Instead Bednar played coy with reporters suggesting that he wanted to retain the element of surprise when it comes to his lineup decisions, but it could very well be that the Avalanche are still working through what lineup they want to ice in light of their current injuries.
The timing of the injury is rather unfortunate for Landeskog who was having a pretty good run of form prior to going down during the second period of Friday night's 7 - 3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Prior to being injured Landeskog had recorded a point in 10 consecutive games, making it the longest such streak of his career. Over his 22 games this season he has 9 goals and 18 assists for 27 points and currently boasts a plus minus rating of +12 on the season, and as a result there are legitimate concerns about how this could impact the momentum he built up for himself and the Avalanche going forward.
The Avalanche also announced today that they had called up 31 year old goaltender Pavel Francouz after he has had a very strong start to the season with the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League. Through 4 games Francouz has a 1.52 goals against average and a .945 save percentage and he will be backing up Darcy Kuemper.
