Bad news for Brandon Carlo.
The Bruins lose their defenseman to a big hit.
The Boston Bruins are already playing with a depleted roster this season with a number of key players sidelined by injuries, and unfortunately for the Bruins their injury woes got even worse over the weekend.
On Saturday night the Bruins faced off against the Arizona Coyotes and although they did manage to pick up the win rather convincingly, the Bruins also suffered a big loss when Coyotes forward Liam O'Brien delivered a big hit to Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo. Carlo did not go down as a result of the hit, but did bounce violently off the glass and appeared to be stunned momentarily as a result of the impact.
I may be reading too much into his reaction time following the hit though, so you can see and judge for yourself in the short reply below:
The Bruins have now confirmed that Carlo will miss time due to an upper body injury, something that newly appointed Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery confirmed himself on Sunday.
"You know he's better today than we were expecting, so we're hopeful but he's still not ready to play," admitted Montgomery on Sunday.
This of course explains away the decision to call up defenseman Dan Renouf earlier today, a decision that many suspected was related to the Carlo injury. When asked why Renouf had been called upon over some other potential names, Montgomery responded that he feels Renouf best emulates the style of play that the Bruins have come to expect of Carlo, and therefore would be the best fit as his replacement in the lineup. Montgomery described Renouf as a solid stay-at-home type of defenseman, one that he believes will be able to move the puck well for the Bruins in Carlo's absence.
There is a real cause for concern here given the nature of this injury and the hit itself, and given that Carlo has had a number of concussions throughout his career as a professional hockey player. We hope he makes a full and quick recovery from this injury, concussion or otherwise.
