This race just got very interesting.

Two days ago reports surfaced stating that Milan Lucic to Edmonton was a 100% done deal, but as if often the case when dollars are involved, things can change quickly. To be fair, Lucic himself did call those reports a complete fabrication, although he used more colorful language.

ESPN insider Pierre LeBrun is now reporting that multiple teams are still in on Lucic, and the most surprising part of his report are the names of two new contenders. According to LeBrun both the Montreal Canadiens and the Dallas Stars are now also in the race to acquire the bruising forward.

LeBrun also mentioned Edmonton and Vancouver by name, stating that they were still in the running as well, but added that these four were not the only ones in the mix. The Detroit Red Wings could be one of those other teams as they have been mentioned several times in connection to Lucic, although they may have their sights set on forward Kyle Okposo.

Lucic to Montreal would make for an incredible story, after all he was arguably the most hated Bruin for several years during the Montreal-Boston rivalry, and no doubt the respect he gained from fans in that city during that time would result in them welcoming him with open arms.

For different reasons Lucic to Dallas would also be a very exciting scenario, seeing what he is capable of bringing to the table with Jamie Benn or a Tyler Seguin at his side would make for must see hockey next season.

It's worth noting that Montreal's sudden interest could be a result of other free agents have no interest in signing there.
