Brett Hull sends Alex Ovechkin a message.
Hull has some words to share with Ovi.
It is not every day that you get to witness history made in the National Hockey League and it is even rarer still to see some of the legendary records of the pass be challenged, or even sometimes broken.
A record that many believed for a very long time would never be touched was the all-time goal scoring record set by none other than Wayne Gretzky, otherwise known simply as "The Great One". Gretzky recorded a mind boggling 894 goals during the span of his career and although it is a record that may never be broken a true challenger has emerged in the form of Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin.
This week Ovechkin recorded the 742nd goal of his NHL career, so far, a milestone that put him ahead of another NHL legend in Brett Hull. Hull had 741 during the course of his career and, although I am sure he was not happy to be bumped down a spot on the all time list, Hull showed great class by taking the time to record a short video to commemorate the moment for Ovechkin.
I'll be honest here this one did come off very much like Hull was reading it off of a script and as a result it seemed a little robotic. In spite of the fact that it felt very unnatural, Hull still deserves credit for doing it at all considering the fact that it has a direct impact on his legacy as a player in the league.
Ovechkin will now have to leapfrog over 3 more names if he wants to stand alone at the top of the mountain, but it will not be an easy task. The names ahead of him belong to Jaromir Jagr(766), Gordie Howe(801) and the aforementioned Wayne Gretzky(894). All 3 men are considered legends of the sport in their own right and even getting close to any of them has made Ovechkin a surefire first ballot Hall of Fame player, the only question now is where will he be on that list when he is inevitably enshrined alongside the other legends of the sport.
