Down 2-1 to the Buffalo Sabres, the Bruins are making changes.
The Boston Bruins came into their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres full of confidence, with Bruins head coach Marco Sturm choosing some strong words ahead of the series, but after 3 games have been played the Bruins find themselves down 2 games to 1 in the series.
On Saturday, Bruins head coach Marco Sturm signaled that changes would be coming to the Bruins lineup ahead of Game 4 as the Bruins look to climb back into the series and tie things up against the Sabres. The most notable of these changes was the decision to make highly touted first round pick James Hagens a healthy scratch for Game 4.
Hagens has appeared in all 3 games for the Bruins thus far in the Stanley Cup playoffs but has failed to produce anything offensively while collecting 2 penalty minutes and a plus minus rating of -2. That being said it would be completely unfair to suggest that the Bruins' fortunes were the result of Hagens' play, and Sturm suggested as much when he explained his decision to shake things up.
"Listen James didn't do anything wrong, nothing," said Sturm. "This kid is 19 years old."
Sturm seemed to indicate that he was concerned with a lack of consistency from Hagens, although the 7th overall pick at the 2026 National Hockey League Entry Draft has only had a total of 5 regular season and playoff games to adapt to both the Bruins and the NHL.
"It's a tough league," said Sturm. "Consistency it's a big thing, it's hard."
Sturm made it clear that he plans to go back to Hagens in the future although didn't provide any clarity on when exactly that future might be.
It is a decision that has been met with a mixed reaction with some feeling that the rookie head coach is choosing an easy scapegoat when other more established players on the Bruins roster are perhaps more deserving of criticism than Hagens.
Let me know what you think of this move from Sturm in the comments.
