The Canucks star goaltender is going to be out for a while.
This is unfortunately a story that fans of the Vancouver Canucks have heard far too many times in recent years.
On Sunday, Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin met with the media to discuss the recent addition of veteran forward David Kampf, but also shared updates on other members of his roster during that media availability.
Allvin did have some good news, revealing some positive progress on the topic of injured forward Filip Chytil, but there was also some good news, specifically as it pertains to star goaltender Thatcher Demko. Demko was initially reported to be out for roughly 2-3 weeks following his most recent injury but when Allvin was asked to confirm that time line he stopped short of doing so.
Instead Allvin would only provide a vague description of the timeline he expects Demko to be out for, leaving open the possibility of course that it could be even longer than initially reported.
"I would say week to week," said Allvin.
The Demko situation is quickly becoming something of a disaster for the Canucks with their top goaltender clearly someone they can't rely on with any level of consistency. Demko appeared in just 23 games all of last season and is off to a tough start already this season with only 10 appearances under his belt. That being said he has played well given the context, with a 2.80 goals against average and a .903 save percentage despite having had such long layoffs over the last few seasons due to injury.
The Canucks are of course hoping that Demko will be healthy when he returns, and more importantly that he will stay that way when he does.
