McDavid speaks out after a heated exchange was captured on video on Sunday.
The Edmonton Oilers are coming off of a historically bad loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night and, as you might expect after that type of loss, tensions were running high when the team hit the ice on Sunday.
Oilers insider Ryan Rishaug was able to capture video of a heated exchange during the team's morning skate including a fired up Connor McDavid barking instructions at his teammates as he gestured around the ice. It was a very animated McDavid, at least by McDavid standards, and as a result it was a scene that drew a lot of attention on social media.
As you might expect, the Oilers themselves have tried to downplay the situation suggesting that it was merely a normal exchange when you consider the context of a team struggling to start the season. That seems very likely to be the case from my perspective, something that McDavid himself addressed when he was asked about the incident following practice on Sunday.
"Everybody has more to bring so you start seeing some of that in practice," said McDavid. "It’s gotta translate into games. It’s normal to have conversations with guys about different things we’re seeing out there. The game has felt at times unorganized and out of sync, so the only way to work that stuff out is to be talking and communicating with your teammates so you’re gonna start to see some of that."
I don't think that fans in the City of Edmonton will mind seeing this level of passion from the Oilers' captain, especially given that many of them are likely just as frustrated as McDavid himself with the team off to a 6-6-4 start to the season.
