One of the ugliest nights in Oilers history.
There's simply no sugarcoating it, the Edmonton Oilers embarrassed themselves and their fans on home ice on Saturday night, suffering a loss so ugly that it will go down in the history books as the largest margin of defeat for the Edmonton Oilers in their franchise's history.
On Saturday night the Oilers had an abysmal performance against the Colorado Avalanche in what was a horribly one-sided 9-1 thrashing at the hands of the Avalanche, tying the biggest margin of defeat in Oilers history. In fact you would have to go all the way back to January 27th, 2009 and a 10-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, and you know that was a long time ago if the Buffalo Sabres were doing that kind of damage on the scoreboard.
While the Oilers themselves had plenty of things to say after the ugly defeat, former National Hockey League defenseman Kevin Bieksa likely said it best when he chastised the team for their lack of... everything, following the terrible loss.
"If I was a fan and I went to that game and my team lost 9-1 wouldn't you want to see some fighting or some confrontations at the end?" asked Bieksa on Hockey Night in Canada. "I'd wanna see something."
At the center of it all was another abysmal performance from Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, who has to be on the chopping block after being pulled for the fourth time already this season. Although Knoblauch didn't directly blame Skinner for the loss, he did point to two goals that Skinner let in early as the key contributing factor to his team's awful performance on Saturday night.
"After the first goal there was a lot of deflation, especially after the second one after the face off," confirmed Knoblauch.
Knoblauch didn't mince words when sharing his thoughts on where the Oilers are at this stage of the regular season.
"I hope this is rock bottom for us," said Knoblauch. "I hope this wakes up a lot of guys and we understand that we have a lot of growing to do to become a good hockey team."
