Earlier this week, it was revealed that the St. Louis Blues has joined the Timo Meier sweepstakes, working on a trade to land the San Jose Sharks’ top forward.

However, insider Chris Johnston just reported on TSN that talks between the Blues and Sharks have cooled off and that the watch return to the original three teams that expressed interest for Meier: the New Jersey Devils, Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights.

Johnston added: “ Vegas is a dark horse to get Meier after getting Shea Weber’s contract off the books.”

Two days ago, the Golden Knights managed to get rid of Weber’s contract, acquiring defenseman Dysin Mayo from the Arizona Coyotes in return. Vegas also add to send a 2023 fifth-round pick in the transaction, but did not retain any money on Weber’s deal.

Johnston believes that with the cap relief from that trade and the team’s LITR, the Golden Knights could be the ones to watch in the Meier’s sweepstakes.

The Devils have held talks with San Jose also, however, it was recently reported that “a big sticking point is that the Sharks continue to ask for Dawson Mercer as part of a return.”

The Hurricanes have made it clear they are getting ready to make a splash ahead of March 3rd, and that could be thanks to Meier.

If the Devils remain unwilling to move Mercer in order to get Meier, the Sharks might shift their focus to other interested teams that might be willing to pay a high price to get the talented forward on their roster ahead of the deadline and postseason.

And that very well may be Vegas.
