Darryl Sutter makes a major change to his lineup before facing the Oilers.
An eyebrow raiser from Daryl Sutter.
It seems that both the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers will be making changes to their lineup ahead of the first official 'Battle of Alberta' of the 2022-23 National Hockey League regular season, with the Oilers announcing a relatively minor alteration to their lineup earlier today.
The Flames on the other hand are making a rather significant change to their lineup ahead of what is usually a pretty big game on their schedule, one that will come between the pipes. It was Postmedia's West Gilbertson who first noticed that Flames backup goaltender Dan Vladar was in the starter's net during the Flames morning skate on Saturday, and it would be head coach Darryl Sutter that would later confirm his decision to go with Vladar for tonight's game.
It would appear that Sutter intends to give his backup goaltender a significant amount of work this season, with the veteran head coach indicating that he intends to use Vladar each and every week.
That would reflect a relatively similar workload to the one that Valadar took on last season with the Flames, with the 25 year old netminder making 23 appearances over the course of the regular season. Vladar had a 2.75 goals against average and a .906 save percentage over the course of those games.
This will give veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who was in net for the Flames on Thursday night when they defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche, the night off.
