Earlier this week, defenseman Erik Johnson was pulled from the Buffalo Sabres because of that time of the year. On Friday, Johnson was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Sabres receive a 2024 fourth round pick. There is no salary retention in the transaction.

Johnson is a reliable right-shot defenseman and his presence could bring leadership to the dressing room in Philly.

The Sabres now have eight draft picks in 2024, including two selections in each of the fourth and seventh rounds. The team previously acquired a conditional seventh-round pick from the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Kyle Okposo on Friday.

Back in July, Johnson signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Sabres. He posted had three goals in 50 games while averaging 13:48 in ice time, including a team-high 3:03 on the penalty kill.

Selected first overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2006, Johnson has 91 goals and 340 points in 970 career games split between the Blues, Colorado Avalanche, and Sabres. He helped lead the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup in 2022, the team’s first championship since 2001.
