Everyone, especially in Toronto, has been waiting to see what happens with Rasmus Sandin. Talks between the Maple Leafs and the restricted free agent have reportedly gone nowhere, so much so that rumours emerged that a trade could be forced to happen. Trading Sandin might be a terrible decision for the Maple Leafs, though it may be their best option.

According to Cap Friendly, the Maple Leafs have little to no salary cap to offer a raise for Sandin without making another move. The young defenseman is just off his three-year entry level contract. For now, NHL teams are allowed exceed the cap during the off-season. But the clock is ticking and it will be over soon…

And so trade rumours were back on the table and got so intense that CP24, a television network in Toronto, believe one fake report that got trending on social media and shared it on live television. The fake deal was reported to be a trade between Toronto and the Vancouver Canucks, sending Sandin in return for forward Nils Hoglander.

The rumour is fake and I am sure the network corrected the blunder, however, some fans are wondering if this isn’t a there’s no smoke without fire situation…

Sandin recorded five goals and 16 points in 51 games, predominantly in a third-pairing role for the Maple Leafs this past season.

Will he sign with Toronto prior to training camp, or will he pull a William Nylander - or will he be on the move?
