Waivers cost the Flyers.

The Philadelphia Flyers are one player lighter.

On Friday, the Flyers made the decision to put forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel on waivers and almost immediately following the news that Aube-Kubel had been waived there was chatter that he could be claimed. It would appear as though that chatter was right on the mark, as Aube-Kubel is now officially a member of the Colorado Avalanche after the Avalanche submitted a claim for him on Saturday.

Interestingly enough it sounds like the Avalanche were not the only team that may have had interest in the 25 year old winger, with National Hockey League insider Frank Seravalli reporting that "a handful" of teams were weighing the possibility of bringing in Aube-Kubel over the last 24 hours since the Flyers placed him on waivers.

Aube-Kubel has only made 7 regular season appearances for the Flyers this season and has no goals and 1 assist over that stretch of play. He also has 6 penalty minutes to his name and currently sits on a plus minus rating of -3 through those 7 games.

For the Avalanche this will prove to be a relatively low risk pickup, with Aube-Kubel coming with a relatively manageable price tag. The former Flyers forward is currently in the second and final year of a contract he signed with the Flyers in 2020, one that carries a cap hit of $1.075 million per season. The Avalanche will have to cough up a little extra salary given that Aube-Kubel's contract was back loaded, he will earn $1.225 million in real money this season, but that won't impact the all important salary cap.

The Flyers lose a player that won over fans and management quickly during the 2019 - 2020 season where he had 7 goals and 8 assists for 15 points in just 36 games, but one who has largely failed to live up to that initial hype over the two seasons that have followed. Perhaps a fresh start with the Colorado Avalanche is just what the doctor ordered for Aube-Kubel, and if you're a Flyers fan you can find a silver lining by looking at this as a little over $1 million off the books moving forward.
