There's always a risk when you place a player on the waiver wire, and the Ottawa Senators got a harsh reminder of that fact on Monday afternoon.

The Senators had waived left winger Matt Puempel on Sunday with the expectation that he would be sent down to the American Hockey League, but unfortunately a rival team has stepped up and claimed Puempel off of waivers.

A report from TSN's Darren Dreger claims that the New York Rangers have made the move to acquire Puempel with Dreger adding that the move is likely to be a direct response to the announcement that the Rangers have lost Mika Zibanejad for several weeks due to a broken leg.

Puempel is a former first round draft pick of the Ottawa Senators, he has appeared in 52 career National Hockey League games where he has 4 goals and 2 assists for 6 total career points.
