We all know how things look way different in Chicago for Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and star forward Patrick Kane. The rebuild is on, and it will be no small task. GM Kyle Davidson pulled off two large trades on the draft floor at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. First up, Davidson traded star forward Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for the 7th overall pick, a 2nd round and a 3rd pick. Then Davidson shipped out former 3rd overall pick Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for the 13th overall pick and another 2nd round pick.
The Hawks lost key players and they have no clue if Toews and Kane will want to stay on board. On Thursday finally, Davidson offered an update on what might be going through the heads of his veteran players, telling Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times that “neither Patrick Kane nor Jonathan Toews have approached the Blackhawks with trade requests.”
He also added that “all parties are “excited to get to training camp and see how the season plays out.”
This is in line with what insiders have been reporting recently saying that Kane and Toews - if they get traded - will be moved around the trade deadline.
There is a honest sense that Toews and Kane would prefer to remain Blackhawks until they retire, but maybe this reconstruction is too much for them and they will seek another championship before hanging up the skates.
Kane has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and his hometown Buffalo Sabres, which chatter has been quieter when it comes to Toews.
Speculations might pick up as the season unfolds, especially now that Davidson revealed that, despite the many rumours he has seen, there’s “nothing new.”
But we bet new rumours will happen soon.
