Hockey Canada sinks lower with latest action

This does absolutely nothing to improve their tarnished image.

Michael W.

As if Hockey Canada needed any more tarnishing to their already damaged reputation, they go and do this.

Already in the crosshairs of intense and justifiable media, pundit and even government scrutiny thanks to their mishandling of alleged sexual assaults committed by members of the 2003 and 2018 squads that competed for world championships, the organization is now taking action against the Canadian government in order to stop disclosure of its financial information.

This stems in connection to an Access to Information Act request.

Per La Presse (translated from French):

"This litigation began with an access to information request, in the spring of 2021. A citizen wrote to the Department of Heritage to obtain “all requests for Hockey Canada grants”, then to find out how the money was spent . The requester also wanted to consult all correspondence between Hockey Canada and Canadian Heritage, between 2004 and 2019.

According to court documents, the Department of Heritage seemed willing to hand over "financial, commercial, scientific and technical" documents, which Hockey Canada says it gave it "in confidence." Before proceeding, the government notified Hockey Canada on April 29, 2021. This is the law, when a third party is involved. A few days later, on May 17, Hockey Canada vigorously opposed the release of the documents.

Why?

In its initial motion, the federation argues that the disclosure of financial and business information, such as the amount of per diems paid to its representatives, "would harm [Hockey Canada]'s competitive position and cause it serious hardship."
