Hurricanes invite a special guest to troll the Maple Leafs.
A brilliant move from the Hurricanes.
The Carolina Hurricanes might be the biggest trolls in the National Hockey League.
Not only do the Hurricanes have arguably the best social media team in the business, but it would appear as though they're great when it comes to trolling you in person as well.
Via an official announcement from the Hurricanes, we now know that legendary Emergency Backup Goaltender David Ayres will be on hand tonight when the Hurricanes welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. To be clear Ayres won't be stepping in between the pipes this time, but instead will be a special guest of the Hurricanes and will serve as the honorary "Siren Sounder" during the game.
Ayres rose to fame back in February of 2020 when he was suddenly thrust into the spotlight due to a series of unfortunate events. The Hurricanes were in Toronto on the 22nd of that month and during a game against the Leafs they lost both goaltenders Petr Mrazek and James Reimer to injury. The injuries left the Hurricanes without a goaltender and they were forced to call upon an emergency backup goaltender in the second period of the game. That man just so happened to be Ayres who was working as a building operator for Ricoh Coliseum which was at the time the home of the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs' American Hockey League affiliate team.
The look on the face of Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour when the 42 year old trotted out to the ice was not one of confidence, but Ayres would do the Hurricanes proud. Although he would have something of a shaky start, understandable given he was making his NHL debut under crazy circumstances, Ayres would hold down the fort for the Hurricanes and eventually led them to the win.
It was a beautiful moment and one that clearly moved the people involved. The very same Rod Brind'Amour gave a beautiful speech in the locker room following the win, giving full credit to Ayres who had done the impossible for his team.
