In case you missed it, the Vegas Golden Knights pulled a last night trade on Wednesday night, sending forward Erik Haula to the Carolina Hurricanes in return of prospect Nicolas Roy and a conditional 2021 fifth round pick.

Last season was a tough one for Haula, who might benefit from the change of scenery. He missed the final 67 games of the 2018-19 season after suffering a major knee injury Nov. 6. He underwent surgery shortly after and will be ready for training camp… now in Raleigh.

The Golden Knights have no other choice but to clear cap space this summer. They already have a projected cap hit of $89,024,999, according to Cap Friendly: moving Haula’s $2.75 million contract lowers that to $86,274,999.

As for the Hurricanes, they are parting with Roy, a 22-year-old prospect who played just seven games in the NHL. While he has yet to record a point in the big league, he had 17 goals and 19 assists in 69 games for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers this season.

While the move does not necessarily improve the Golden Knights' roster for the upcoming season it does make room for the hefty contracts given to players like William Karlsson and Mark Stone.
