Two sucker punches in a single night of NHL hockey.
There seems to be an epidemic of sucker punches in the National Hockey League, at least that is what you would think if you had tuned in to NHL games for the very first time on Saturday night.
The NHL's Department of Player Safety has announced not one but two potential suspensions related to the act of sucker punching after Saturday night with Winnipeg Jets defenseman Logan Stanley delivering a sucker punch to Ottawa Senators' captain Brady Tkachuk and now we have another announcement as well.
Player Safety has announced that Calgary Flames forward John Beecher will have a hearing with the disciplinary arm of the league for a sucker punch that he delivered to Nashville Predators forward Michael McCarron.
This second incident occurred in the very first period of a Saturday clash between the Flames and Predators, with both men coming together with roughly over 6 minutes left to go in the opening frame. Things were getting nasty in front of the Flames bench and when Beecher approached McCarron, the latter would drop his gloves immediately and began peppering Beecher with shots before Beecher could even get his gloves off.
Seeing this transpire the NHL officials immediately stepped in to seperate the two men but, after taking several unanswered shots to the face, Beecher wasn't ready to let it end there. Instead Beecher would wait patiently until both the official and McCarron thought the exchange was over before delivering a bare-knuckled punch directly to McCarron's unsuspecting jaw.
The punch sent McCarron falling to the ice where he would remain, clutching at his head, for several moments after the sucker punch from Beecher. Here is a look at the replay:
