Woll showered with love.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had something of a goaltending problem early in the season, thanks in large part to the injuries sustained by veteran goaltender Petr Mrazek, but on Sunday night the Leafs got a big surprise in the form of goaltender Joseph Woll.

To be clear the Leafs haven't received bad goaltending this season, it's just that starting netminder Jack Campbell has had to take on a tremendous workload given the lack of a quality backup in the organization. On Sunday night however, the aforementioned Woll got just his second start in the National Hockey League and definitely showed some signs of being a capable netminder at the highest level of the sport.

Woll faced a total of 20 shots from the New York Islanders over the course of 60 minutes of play, stopping all 20 of them for his first career shutout in the NHL in only his second career game. Yes, it's true that the Islanders have looked bad this season and it's true that they currently have a significant portion of their roster on the Covid protocol list, but it was nonetheless a major accomplishment for Woll.

As you would expect Woll was mobbed by his teammates on the ice when the final horn sounded to signal the end of the game, but if you thought the celebration on the ice was special... the one in the locker room put it to shame.

Woll appeared to be the last man in as the Leafs headed back into the locker room, with only Jack Campbell who hadn't played in the game walking behind him, and when he crossed the barrier into the Leafs locker room everyone went absolutely nuts. Woll was immediately mobbed by his teammates and was showered with what appeared to be beer by his fellow Leafs, much to his delight. Woll himself could not contain his excitement and began to jump up and down in celebration, clearly loving every second of the moment.

It is one of those moments in sports that just makes you feel good, and regardless of what team you cheer for it is easy to feel happy for the 23 year old goaltender.
