LA's roster is getting a serious makeover on Day One of free agency.
The Los Angeles Kings came into free agency with clear intentions to reshape their roster, and within the first hours of July 1, they made that vision unmistakable. Three signings in rapid succession signaled that GM Ken Holland and head coach Peter Laviolette are building something with urgency.
The headliner now is Mats Zuccarello, who appears headed to Los Angeles on a one-year deal that includes bonuses. Pierre LeBrun confirmed the structure of the agreement shortly after. Zuccarello brings a wealth of experience and offensive creativity to a Kings group that has been searching for more production up front.
But Zuccarello was far from the only addition.
LeBrun also reported that defenseman Erik Gustafsson is signing with the Kings, giving the blue line a puck-moving presence. The details of Gustafsson's contract were not immediately available, but his addition suggests the Kings are looking to add more skating and transition ability on the back end.
Meanwhile, veteran center Erik Haula rounds out the early wave of signings. The former Nashville Predator is joining on a two-year deal carrying a $3.6 million average annual value. Haula brings 840 games of NHL experience across seven organizations, along with a track record of reliable depth scoring. He posted 14 goals and 38 points in 81 games last season.
The Haula signing in particular fits the profile the Kings reportedly targeted this offseason. Los Angeles wanted to add experienced depth scoring without breaking the bank, and Haula checks that box. His age also makes him eligible for a performance-based contract structure, which could help the Kings navigate their cap situation more efficiently.
The Kings entered the offseason with roughly $11 million in cap space, and these three additions suggest Holland is deploying that flexibility aggressively. Rather than swinging for one blockbuster move, the strategy appears to be layered improvement across multiple positions.
For now, the Kings look like one of the busiest teams on Day One, and with the roster still taking shape, more moves could be on the way as free agency rolls on.
