On Tuesday night, Game 1 between the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers took place and Tom Wilson was on the ice for three shifts and played only 1:31 in the first period.
He still managed to score the first goal in the first period to take the lead against the league-best Panthers. But moments after that, he got hurt. While it was not confirmed on exactly how the injury took place, he did not get bac on the ice after this. He attempted to deliver a big hit to MacKenzie Weegar behind the net, Wilson crashed into the boards causing a loud thud. He got up on his own but looked slow as he returned to the bench.
During the intermission, fans started wondering if Wilson would return. He swirled around the ice during a break in play in the second period before going back down to the dressing room. The Capitals then ruled Wilson out of the game, and on Wednesday revealed that he is a game-time decision for Game 2 on Thursday, per Samathan Pell.
There is no doubt losing Wilson would be a significant blow for the Capitals, despite Washington taking a 1-0 lead in the series over the Panthers.
Wilson plays in all situations, including the power play and penalty kill, and has become one of the team’s best defensive and physical forwards.
They cannot lose him long term, and in a tight series like this one will be, one game is already too long.
