Training camps are just around the corner and there’s no sign of progress in contract extension talks between the Vancouver Canucks and J.T. Miller.
However, something new and huge came up in Miller’s life this week as the Canucks did annonce on Twitter on Friday that the 29-year-old forward is the proud new father of Owen Edward.
Amidst rumour and trade chatter, Miller has been drawing interest from some teams across the NHL, but we can understand why he’d be focused on something else at the moment with the birth of his son. He and his wife Natalie are already parents to two daughters; Scotlyn born in 2018, and Scarlett born in 2019.
Then the campaign will kick off and earlier this week, the Athletic reported that Miller’s agent has said there’s a good chance they cut off all contract talks with the Canucks once the NHL season begins.
Miller is going into the final season of the five-year, $5.25 million contract that the Canucks originally acquired in a trade on Draft Day back in June 2019. He is looking for a pay raise, and a significant gap remains in contract negotiations with the team.
Which, as you know, has prompted all the trade talks.
The Canucks continue to insist that retaining Miller is their preference, however, something will need to take place in negotiations to reach an agreement that pleases all parties.
But for now, we can understand why Miller is staying away from contract talks, trade rumours and all the chatter and focuses on the new addition to his family.
