An important update for fans eagerly anticipating the Mitch Marner trade.
Earlier today news broke during the 2025 National Hockey League Entry Draft of a potentially massive trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights. At the center of that trade would be Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner, but as of the time of this writing no trade has officially materialized.
If you're one of the many that has eagerly been awaiting news of a trade since the possibility of a real Marner trade first emerged earlier today, it sounds like you will unfortunately have to wait a little while longer. NHL insider Darren Dreger reported on Saturday night that a trade between the Maple Leafs and the Golden Knights was unlikely to materialize today, with many details still to be ironed out according to the insider. Dreger points out that Marner has not signed a contract extension and neither has a trade call been made to the NHL as of yet.
No trade call, nothing signed. More work ahead in terms of the potential of Mitch Marner being traded to Vegas and what the return might be. I don’t expect anything will get done tonight.
The sudden possibility of a trade opening up as an option for the Toronto Maple Leafs is a huge benefit to their team, with the previous forecast looking like they would be losing Marner for nothing in free agency. The rumors of a potential return for the Maple Leafs are not insignificant and it would be a huge coup on the part of Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving if he can get a deal across the finish line before free agency officially opens up on Tuesday.
Marner could also play a role in shifting the perception of his departure from Toronto with a move of this nature, allowing the Maple Leafs to acquire a return when he could ostensibly just leave them with nothing. Marner agreeing to a sign-and-trade, which would require him to waive his no movement clause, could be viewed favorably by a fan base that seems to have largely turned against him.
