The Toronto Maple Leafs may be working on something significant behind the scenes.

Over the weekend a number of teams in the sporting world were adversely impacted by the winter weather, with storms severely impacting travel for several professional sports teams including the National Hockey League's own Detroit Red Wings.

In spite of the concerns around travel over the weekend however, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving was spotted making a trip of his own. An NHL general manager personally scouting a pair of rival teams would make headlines at the best of times, but the fact that Treliving made the trek while there were so many travel restrictions has only made outside observers all that much more curious.

"There was bad weather in Buffalo we all know the story," said Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. "Brad Treliving made a trip on Saturday afternoon to go see the Sabres and the Canucks."

National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman believes that there may be something here.

"I think one of the things we're all sitting there saying... everybody was kind of wondering with the weather the way it was, and with the [Maple Leafs] playing that night it's pretty interesting that he went down there and made that trip."

Friedman also believes that there are some interesting trade options there for the Maple Leafs, although he wonders if the team's poor performance over the last week may have put a stop to Treliving's plans.

"There's some interesting names you could look at in those situations and say 'What's he up to here?' but to be up 3-0 on Colorado and then... to not come out with a point, it's a really rough outcome. A really rough outcome."

This is definitely a situation worth keeping an eye on.
