Talks with the Maple Leafs earlier this week for pending free agent goalie Jack Campbell might have been friendly, but they led to nothing and that’s reportedly because Toronto never tended him an offer.
The veteran goalie is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the next few hours after completing a two-year, $3.3 million deal he signed with the Los Angeles Kings in September of 2019. And according to insider Kevin Weekes, Campbell is closing in a potential five-year, $5 million AAV with the Edmonton Oilers.
However, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reports that general manager Kyle Dubas never made an offer to Campbell this season. She claims that “there was an initial offer early last season, but nothing after that.”
This will get even more frustrating for the Maple Leafs’ fanbase, who strongly reacted to the team acquiring goalie Matt Murray from the Ottawa Senators earlier this week.
Campbell had a 31-9-6 record last season with a .914 save percentage and 2.64 goals-against average, and proved he could take on the role of a starter in Toronto.
However, with no offer on the table, we can understand why he is walking as a free agent.
