Matthew Knies back at center of imminent blockbuster trade!

The Toronto Maple Leafs have spent weeks fielding calls, setting sky-high asking prices, and publicly reassuring Matthew Knies that he is part of their future. But on the opening day of free agency, the 23-year-old power forward finds himself right back in the middle of blockbuster trade speculation.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the widespread assumption has been that Knies would need to be included in any package if Toronto is to land Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. However, Dreger added an intriguing wrinkle, suggesting there is a chance the Leafs could pull off the deal without surrendering their prized winger.

"There's a chance the Leafs won't have to give up the power forward if this trade comes together," Dreger wrote right before the opening of Free Agency on Wednesday.

That would represent a significant shift in the landscape. For weeks, rival front offices have circled Knies as the obvious center piece of any major Toronto trade. The Chicago Blackhawks reportedly dangled the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 Draft to acquire him, but the Leafs demanded additional roster players on top of it. A separate framework involving the Dallas Stars also fell apart when Jason Robertson reportedly declined a long-term extension with the Seattle Kraken, collapsing the domino chain that would have sent a top pick Toronto's way.

Throughout it all, Leafs general manager John Chayka has reportedly communicated directly to Knies that the organization values him and has not come close to finalizing any deal involving him. According to recent reports, the asking price to pry Knies loose has been nothing short of a top-10 pick plus NHL-ready talent, the kind of demand a team sets when it has no real urgency to move a player.

The on-ice numbers back up that stance. Knies registered 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points across 79 games during the 2025-26 season. At his age, with his physical style of play and favorable contract situation, he fits squarely into the core the Leafs are building under new head coach Jim Hiller.

Still, the pursuit of Werenski is clearly a priority for Toronto, and the question of what it will cost remains fluid. If the Leafs can somehow construct a package that satisfies Columbus without including Knies, it would be a remarkable outcome for Chayka's front office.

For now, all eyes are on how the next few hours unfold. With free agency open and trade lines buzzing, today could be the day the Leafs either land their franchise defenseman or walk away from the table entirely.
