Matthews and McDavid on his incredible goal.
Two of the NHL's biggest stars share their thoughts.
Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid has stolen most of the headlines across the hockey world today after an absolutely mind boggling goal on Friday night against the New York Rangers.
McDavid not only scored a game tying goal for his team, he not only did it with just 3 minutes left in the third period, but he did it while beating no fewer than 4 Rangers players on his way to the net. If you somehow have not seen the goal yet, don't worry we've got you covered:
Some of the biggest hockey fans in the world are the players who play in the National Hockey League, so unsurprisingly McDavid's goal has already made the rounds in just about every locker room across the league. On Saturday morning Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews was asked for his thoughts on the goal and he proceeded to pay McDavid a huge compliment.
Rather than gush over the goal as most have, Matthews simply stated that it was what he has come to expect from the Oilers captain after watching him work his magic in the NHL over the last several years of his career.
"Pretty much on par with what he’s done the past six or seven years," said Matthews of the goal.
McDavid himself had a very similar answer to the one that Matthews gave, making it sound like it was just another day at the office for him. McDavid acknowledged that he is among the highest paid players in the entire league and as a result there is an expectation for him to come up with big goals in key moments, something he clearly did on Friday night.
"I'm paid to score big goals and paid to do that type of stuff and it's just, you know, doing my job," said McDavid of the goal. "Probably not the best idea to take 4 guys on every night, but the situation kinda was weird. Everyone was coming up and I was coming down the pipe and I just tried to make a play."
