Mitch Marner has been selling a sob story but now he's being called a liar.
For the past week now we have been hearing a terrible story about how former Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Mitch Marner was treated by the fans on his way out of the City of Toronto.
It began with Marner's agent Darren Ferris making a relatively rare appearance on radio in which he described the harrowing tale in his own words, and concluded with Marner sharing his own thoughts on what happened during those final days during a sit down on-camera interview.
It certainly helped explain the highly unpopular, at least in Toronto, decision from Marner, but what if it was all just a lie designed to do just that? That is now at least what one Toronto journalist is claiming.
On Sunday, Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons called out Marner in brutal fashion by casting serious doubt on the story he has been selling to the public. Simmons called several things about the story into question, but perhaps the most damning part of his column was the part in which he claimed even the Maple Leafs are not buying what Marner is trying to sell to fans in the city of Toronto.
The Leafs, doing their diligence, looked into the situation with Marner, who was still their property at the time. Their security people did the same as part of their regular employment. They found nothing to be concerned about. They wonder now about the veracity of all that is being told.
Simmons isn't the only one casting doubt on Marner's story either, with several fans on social media expressing their own skepticism about Marner's story since his interview was released to the public. Here are just a few examples:
