NHL and Oilers launch investigation on Paul Coffey

On Wednesday night, during the third period of the first game between Edmonton and the Canucks in Vancouver, it was reported that Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey allegedly did a racist hand gesture to a fan who wore a turban. Eye witnesses say that Coffey reportedly turned toward the fan, who was reportedly banged on the glass where the assistant coach stood. Then Coffey allegedly pantomimed putting a turban on his own head and then sarcastically said, ‘Nice hat!’ After some time the fan was removed from the stands and explained what had occurred to arena staff. 

These are all unverified, unconfirmed allegations, but the fan who shared the information has now been informed by a Canucks’ Fan Experience and Event Operations employee that the incident is being reviewed.

Now the NHL and Oilers are said to be investigating the incident, according to The Hockey News.

“The Hockey News has learned that both the Oilers organization and the NHL are investigating the incident - looking to see if there is clear video of the incident taking place.”

However, as TNH points out and our search confirms, there has been no statement released by the Oilers or the NHL regarding this matter at this time.

Unfortunately for Coffey, this isn’t the first time he’s had questionable behaviour and past use of racial gestures. Back in 2014, he received a game misconduct for using “discriminatory slur” and ended up being suspended for three games.

It remains to be seen what sort of consequences come from the investigation, if any. However, the NHL could be involved and Coffey could be penalized for his alleged actions.

I can only hope that this will be resolved and that no one should feel they have the right to disrespect someone using racial slurs.

Game 2 of the second round series takes place later tonight in Vancouver.
