The decision to hire John Chayka is already causing problems for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On Sunday, the Maple Leafs made the controversial decision to hire Chayka official when they announced that Chayka would take over as the next general manager of the Maple Leafs organization. It is a move that most realize will have its fair share of critics, but now a National Hockey League insider has revealed that it is also resulting in headaches for the Maple Leafs already.
On Monday morning, NHL insider Frank Seravalli published a report in which he revealed the NHL was forced to investigate Chayka and the Leafs after at least one opposing team had concerns regarding tampering. specifically as it pertains to Chayka filling out his new staff.
The team expressed concern to the NHL that employees under contract may have been contacted without proper permission. Sources said the NHL looked into the inquiry and found the claim to be unsubstantiated.
The good news here for the Maple Leafs is that, following an investigation from the NHL, the claims were found to be without merit which means there will be no repercussions of any kind as a result of this invesitgation.
The bad news however is that this highlights how some others around the NHL feel about Chayka and you do have to wonder how it will impact his ability to do his job as he moves forward in his new role. Being general manager of the Maple Leafs is already an extremely high pressure job without any additional outside complications, and based on this report it sounds like outside complications may be unavoidable for Chayka moving forward.
