NHL Player Safety responds after calls for a suspension.
The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has come down on Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel for his actions on Sunday night during a game between the Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres.
In an official release, the Department of Player Safety has announced that they have slapped Hagel with a $5,000 fine, the maximum allowed under the rules of the collective bargaining agreement, for being the "aggressor" in an altercation with Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin.
Calling Hagel the aggressor in this scenario is certainly an accurate description of events, the veteran forward pummeled Dahlin with punches from behind and many felt he should have been ejected from the game for his actions. Even after Dahlin had turtled on the ground, Hagel continued to pummel Dahlin eventually leading to a larger brawl between both teams on the ice.
Others, like Pittsburgh Penguins reporter Josh Yohe, called for Hagel to receive a lengthy suspension for his actions.
The league of course felt differently, hitting Hagel with a fine that likely won't phase a player on an 8 year deal at an average annual value and cap hit of $6.5 million per season. Hagel will however be considered a repeat offender should he find himself on the wrong side of NHL Player Safety within the next 18 months.
