NHL Player Safety is stepping in after a nasty low blow on Connor McDavid.
The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety is stepping in after a nasty cheap shot on Saturday night went unnoticed by the NHL officials on the ice.
During the third period of Saturday night's game between the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks, Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers took what can only be described as a cheap shot at Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Myers, who was away from the play and next to McDavid at the time, very deliberately slammed his stick between McDavid's legs, so hard in fact that the blow caused McDavid to jump off the ice in pain, nailing the Oilers star forward right in the family jewels.
It looked extremely painful to say the least and, rather unsurprisingly, McDavid wasn't the least bit happy about it. Here's a look at the replay:
I speculated in my original report on the incident that the lack of a call on the ice could spell trouble for Myers, with NHL Player Safety all that much more likely to get involved in the matter, and as it turns out that is exactly what has transpired.
Thankfully for Myers and the Canucks they have avoided any potential suspension and instead the league has chosen to hit Myers with a fine for his infraction. On Sunday, NHL Player Safety officially announced that Myers would face a fine in the amount of $2,500 for what they are calling "slashing" against McDavid.
While the fine itself isn't likely to have much of an impact on Myers he will now be considered a repeat offender for the next 18 months should he find himself on the wrong side of NHL Player Safety again within that time frame.
Did the NHL make the right call? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
