NHL rules Oilers will NOT get cap relief if Duncan Keith retires this offseason
Gary Bettman literally just chooses which rules he will and will not enforce. Bush league stuff.

Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland has his work cut out for him this offseason. He has pending UFA Evander Kane to deal with, as well as RFAs Kailer Yamamoto and Jesse Puljujarvi, he has to shore up his goaltending and... oh yeah he has to come to terms with head coach Jay Woodcroft. In other words, it's going to be a busy offseason in Edmonton and because the Oilers are capped out, Holland will need to get creative.
The other player that Oilers GM Ken Holland needs to worry about, of course, is veteran defenseman Duncan Keith. His contract makes him difficult to trade but removing him from the equation tactfully could net the team as much as $8 million in salary cap savings due to the NHL's bizarre way of calculating these types of things.
More from Puck Pedia:
Or, at least, that's what we were led to believe until just yesterday when NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly announced that “No, there is no concept of a ‘cap credit’ for current teams that may lose a player to retirement.”
So, in effect, the NHL just decided to change the rules... just because? This is just more bush league nonsense from the NHL. Picking and choosing which rules to enforce. What a joke.
