Team USA head coach Bob Motzko shares the official update on Cole Hutson.
Fans that tuned in to the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship on Saturday night were met with a horrifying sight roughly midway through a game between the United States of America and Switzerland. American defenseman Cole Hutson was struck in the back of his head and neck by a shot that came from above the face-off circle, with Hutson having his back turned to the play and being caught completely by surprise.
The end result was a terrifying scene where Hutson was stretchered off the ice, a scary scene in any scenario but especially when it comes to a tournament that is played by what are very much still young kids.
Thankfully the news that has come out since the incident itself has been very positive, with Hutson seemingly having avoided serious injury despite needing assistance to get off the ice. Hutson was transported to the hospital by ambulance but, according to comments from Team USA head coach Bob Motzko, Hutson was released from hospital that very same night and was back with his teammates at the Grand Casino Arena where the tournament is being held in relatively short order.
"Cole's back with us, and we'll know more in the morning," said Motzko. "It was a scary situation no question."
According to Motzko he even made it back in time to shower with his teammates.
"He's in the locker room, showered with the guys," confirmed Motzko.
Hutson was down on the ice, unmoving, for several long moments so I would be surprised to see him return in this tournament, but it certainly seems like Team USA believes that is a possibility. Hutson is currently being listed as day to day and that could very well indicate that we will see him on the ice again before this tournament comes to a close.
