Oilers cut ties with 3 players.
Oilers expected to cut 3 players loose on Monday.
The Edmonton Oilers have decided to move on from three of their roster players.
On Friday the Edmonton Oilers announced that they had extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Tyler Benson, Ryan McLeod, Jesse Puljujarvi and Kailer Yamamoto, an announcement that meant that 3 of their restricted free agents will not be qualified before Monday's deadline. A player that does not receive a qualifying offer becomes an unrestricted free agent and that will be the case for the 3 players cut loose by the Oilers on Sunday.
Those players are 26 year old forward Brendan Perlini, 25 year old defenseman Filip Berglund and 23 year old forward Ostap Safin.
The decision to cut Perlini loose is likely the most notable given that fans saw him utilized at the NHL level last season. Over 23 games Perlini scored 4 goals and added an assist for 5 points during the regular season. This isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for Perlini who was earning the league minimum this season on a 1 year deal with an average annual value and cap hit of $750,000, which means that it would have been very inexpensive for the Oilers to qualify him had they chosen to do so.
This very likely feels like a low point in the career of the former 1st round pick (12th overall) of the Arizona Coyotes at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
The decision to cut loose Berglund likely also stings for the Oilers who obviously had high expectations for him when they signed him out of the Swedish Hockey League. The former Oilers 3rd round pick (91st overall) at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft spent the entire season with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League and could very well be headed back to Sweden off the heels of this news.
Lastly, the decision to cut Ostap Safin the former Oilers 4th round pick (115th overal) at the 2017 NHL Entry draft comes as little surprise given that he only saw limited play in the AHL and ECHL and has largely failed to deliver on what the Oilers may have seen in him.
