Another terrible goaltending performance leaves the Oilers with an impossible choice.
The Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a familiar position after 3 games in their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks, a familiar position that they desperately wish they didn't find themselves in once again.
After just 3 Stanley Cup playoff games there is unquestionably once again a goaltending controversy in Edmonton, with goaltender Connor Ingram coughing up an abysmal 17 goals over the course of just those 3 games. That has been enough to earn Ingram a 4.70 goals against average and a .849 save percentage through the first 3 games of the playoffs, numbers you're simply not going to be winning many playoff games with.
Of course Ingram was never supposed to be the starting netminder for the Oilers in these playoffs with the Oilers making a mid-season trade to acquire Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins to fill that role. Jarry of course was an unmitigated disaster for the Oilers, with Jarry not only struggling in goal but reportedly causing issues with his teammates as well, and that may be the man they now have to turn to.
While that may sound like an outlandish idea to some Oilers fans who witnessed the disaster that was Tristan Jarry this season, several former NHL goaltenders are already championing the idea.
"They'll have the discussion there's no doubt about it," said former NHL goaltender Kelly Hrudey. "I think I would be leaning towards Jarry."
"Now may be the time." said former NHL goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.
The unfortunate reality is that there may be no good answer here for the Oilers, and no matter what choice they make there will be those who will question the decision.
