August 3rd, 1966: After a 10 day “name the team” contest, new NHL expansion team owner Ed Snider officially names his new club the Philadelphia Flyers.
In truth, Snider had the name in his back pocket all along, as it was a favorite of his once it was first suggested by his sister. Nevertheless, Snider opens up naming suggestions to the public and chooses nine-year-old Alec Stockard’s suggestion of "Fliers" as the winner, before finally being amended to “Flyers”.
Since that fateful day the Flyers have gone on to win two Stanley Cups, eight Conference championships and 16 division championships. The Flyers have established themselves as one of the NHL’s premier franchises and their name, logo and jersey has become iconic in the sports world.
