Fans are furious after the latest ruling from NHL Player Safety.
Fans in Vancouver are not going to be happy with this decision.
On Friday night, Canucks defenseman Filip Hronek was forced to leave a game against the Carolina Hurricanes after he was on the receiving end of an ugly looking hit from Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov. The hit occurred in the final moments of the third period and forced Hronek to leave the game after he was pulled off the ice by the National Hockey League's concussion spotters, and many felt it should have resulted in a penalty for Svechnikov.
During the hit the Hurricanes forward raises his arm and appeared to get his elbow out, making contact with Hronek's head. Here is a look at the replay:
Hronek's agent was not happy with the lack of call, slamming the NHL's officials after the game had concluded:
"Here we go again!" wrote Alan Walsh. "The National Concussion League. Open season on NHL players’ brains. No call on the play. If only the referee were in a position to have a clear view of the play."
Walsh and fans of the Canucks will be even more outraged to learn that the NHL's Department of Player Safety has determined that no supplemental discipline is warranted for Svechnikov, placing the blame for the head contact squarely at Hronek's feet. Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal broke the news, revealing that the league determined that Hronek's movement was responsible for the head contact.
There is no discipline coming for Andrei Svechnikov and his elbow on Filip Hronek last night.
While it could have been called a penalty on the ice, the movement of Hronek as he is moving the puck substantially contributes to the hit to the head rather than Hronek's arm.
There has been a ton of outrage in response to this news and I can't wait to hear your thoughts in the comments.
