The trade chatter must be driving Patrick Kane nuts… It’s been going on for months and more intensely in recent weeks after Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson pulled off two large trades on the draft floor in Montreal. He first traded star forward Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for the 7th overall pick, a 2nd round and a 3rd pick. Then Davidson shipped out former 3rd overall pick Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for the 13th overall pick and another 2nd round pick. In essence, the Blackhawks loaded up on draft picks by shipping out DeBrincat and Dach.
Many fans and pundits wonder if Kane wants out for another chance at a championship and will demand a trade out of Chicago. Kane has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and even his hometown team, the Buffalo Sabres.
On the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman explain how Kane will have a specific strategy in mind, saying how captain Jonathan Toews could have an impact on Kane and how the star forward could wait to see which teams are playing well during the season. Kane will have his say and might start getting involved now and maybe will get pundits thinking about other potential destinations, but the trade possibility remains a rumour for now.
It’d be understandable if Kane looks to join a contender as a playoff rental before the 2023 trade deadline. It could depend on how where teams land on the standings and Kane could pick one that can pull off a trade and make it all the way to the Stanley Cup.
There is a sense that Kane is after at least one last championship before he hangs up the skates - and we all know that’s not going to happen in Chicago.
And so, with Kane in the driver’s seat when it comes to a trade - where do he go next?
