Patrick Roy makes it clear he wants Canadiens' GM job

Let's go, St. Patrick!

Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson absolutely cleaned house this past weekend, parting ways with GM Marc Bergevin, Assistant GM Scott Mellanby and co-Assistant GM Trevor Timmins. Molson then wasted no time in bringing in a new voice hiring former New York Rangers GM Jeff Gorton as the team's new Executive Vice President.

It's expected that the English-only speaking Gorton will act as the team's de-facto GM until he and Molson make a hiring for the position. At that point Gorton and the team's new GM will work together when it comes to making hockey operations decisions. In other words, Gorton and his future hire will work together to manage the team's roster. It's also believed that, because Gorton is non-French speaking, that the new GM will be French speaking and/or bilingual. That has led to widespread speculation that French-speaking executives like QMJHL GM and coach Patrick Roy, Florida Panthers Assistant GM Roberto Luongo, Tampa Bay Lightning Assistant GM Mathieu Darche,  and Philadelphia Flyers' ECHL GM Daniel Briere could be in consideration for the gig.

Personally, I'd love to see Roy back in the NHL and who better to make his comeback with than the Canadiens? Roy is an icon in Montreal of course, having had his #33 retired by the team in 2008. He resigned as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche back in 2016 after reportedly having disagreements with Avs GM and longtime friend/teammate Joe Sakic on the direction of the team. Since then, Roy has been the GM and head coach of his hometown Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. With an opening in Montreal now though, will the Habs tempt him back into the NHL? It certainly sounds like it.

Check out Roy's comments when asked about the situation by Journal de Quebec reporter Kevin Dube:

Translation: "I wonder what they have to lose by trying me?"

Great question, Patty... great question.

I mean, the Habs just lost to the Vancouver Canucks, a team with their own personal dysfunctions, so things can't get much worse.

I could honestly see a Roy and Gorton pairing working out quite well, provided Roy can keep his ego in check and defer to Gorton when necessary. Actually... now that I say that... there's no way it would work out lol
