Penguins announce contract extension for Rikard Rackell
The news isn't all bad in Pittsburgh.
At least there's one more piece of good news for fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins despite it looking like all but confirmed that longtime forward Evgeni Malkin won't be back for a 17th season.
The Penguins have signed the third of their high profile free agents, agreeing to a multi-year pact with forward Rickard Rakell. The deal is for six years and worth a reported $6 million.
Rakell, a 2011 1st round draft pick, was acquired by the Penguins at this year's NHL Trade Deadline from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon, goaltending prospect Calle Clang and a second-round draft choice. Following his acquisition from the Ducks, Rakell scored four goals with nine assists in 20 games played with his new team; he finished the season with 20 goals and 21 assists in 70 regular-season games.
With the signing, the Penguins have now locked up Bryan Rust, Rakell, and defenseman Kris Letang, though it appears as though 2009 Conn Smythe Trophy winner Malkin may be finished in Pittsburgh.
