Penguins send a message after a controversial call on Saturday.
The Pittsburgh Penguins probably aren't very happy about the call they got on Saturday if this is anything to go by.
On Saturday, the Penguins faced off against the Winnipeg Jets and it wasn't long before controversy would rear its ugly head. In the opening minutes of the game, Jets forward Morgan Baron would find the back of the net when Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs was knocked out of the crease by Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson.
It was Baron himself that would drive Karlsson into Silovs by slamming into the Penguins defenseman during his scoring attempt, leading to the Penguins feeling that a challenge was in order for goaltender interference. That call however would not go the way of the Penguins with the goal being upheld and awarded to Baron, with many expressing their disbelief at the decision from the NHL.
Here is a look at the replay:
The Penguins of course will never come out and criticize the NHL directly for their ruling, but it seems they may have found a more subtle way to protest today's decision on goaltender interference. According to a report from Penguins beat reporter Josh Yohe, the Penguins have gone to media members in attendance at today's game and handed out some print-outs of a specific section of the NHL rule book.
The highlighted section of that print-out reads as follows:
"If a defending player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by an attacking player so as to cause the defending player to come into contact with his own goalkeeper, such contact shall be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule, and necessary a penalty assessed to the attacking player and if a goal is scored it would be disallowed," said the highlighted section of the text.
A spicy response from the Penguins and one that their fans no doubt agree with.
