The Penguins deal with the Flyers has gone horribly wrong.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have just seen one of their most recent trades turn into an unmitigated disaster.
Over the weekend I covered the news that recently acquired Penguins defenseman Egor Zamula was refusing to report to the Penguins American Hockey League team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and now things have gotten much, much worse.
Initially the Penguins made the move to suspend Zamula following his decision to refuse to report, but now it appears the two sides are cutting ties altogether. According to a report from Puck Pedia, there now seems to be no path forward between the two parties and as a result Zamula will be placed on waivers today for the purpose of contract termination.
Of course this is a less than ideal scenario for the Penguins who just traded for Zamula, giving up now former Penguins forward Philip Tomasino to do so. To make matters worse that trade was made with their bitter intrastate rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, who now seem like the clear winners in this trade deal.
Zamula does have NHL experience under his belt and in fact has played a significant role for the Flyers prior to being traded. Zamula only appeared in 13 regular season games for the Flyers prior to being traded this season but had a combined 129 games at the NHL level with the Flyers over the 2 previous seasons.
There are reportedly a number of teams in the NHL prepared to offer him a contract when his contract with the Penguins comes to an end, another bitter pill to swallow for the Penguins who will lose the player for nothing.
