Quinn Hughes gets real after being hit with a tough question.
The Minnesota Wild looked good on Sunday night in their first game with superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes in the lineup, dominating a Boston Bruins team that came into the game on a four game winning streak. The final score would read 6-2 in favor of the Wild with Hughes contributing to that total with a goal in his first appearance in a Wild jersey.
It was a terrific debut for Hughes but following the big win the difficult questions were already coming his way, with Huges being asked if he would consider signing long term in Minnesota.
"Extremely open minded," said Hughes when asked about the possibility of signing long term in Minnesota. "They've got an amazing core... Minnesota being so close to Michigan and The State of Hockey and the passion here. Seeing how the fans reacted to me as well in warmups."
Hughes also added that Wild general manager Bill Guerin making such a bold move to acquire him will also play a factor in him potentially remaining with the Wild beyond his current contract.
"Obviously I've got a lot of time for Billy for quote unquote sacking up and making the deal," said Hughes. "How he valued me. There were other teams that probably could have thrown in certain packages like that too but at the end of the day they didn't wanna do that or they didn't wanna trade two or three assets from the team like Billy did. So I'll remember that and that means a lot to me that Billy did that."
Hughes spoke highly of the Vancouver Canucks organization following his exit, praising many within the organization for how he was treated despite the difficult circumstances.
"I have the ultimate respect for Jim Rutherford and the Aquilini family," said Hughes. "They were first class with everything that was going on. Obviously it was a tough situation but it felt like it was time, and I think Jim did too."
Hughes also revealed that the Canucks worked closely with his agent in an attempt to accommodate him as much as possible during the transition.
"Jim and Pat they were talking a lot about places I might feel comfortable and Jim was amazing with that," said Hughes. "He cared about the person and he wanted me to go where he thinks I would be happy."
