William Nylander was the first to say that everyone was overreacting to his contract situation earlier this month, stating that, despite no real progress made in contract negotiations with the Maple Leafs and new general manager Brad Treliving, there is still a lot of time left to get to an agreement.

Nylander has spent his entire career in Toronto and is now entering the last year of the six-year, $45 million deal signed back in 2018, and could have agreed to a new deal since July 1st, like his teammate Auston Matthews, who ended up inking a four-year extension, at a $13.2 million AAV through the 2027-28 season.

However, the news recently leaked by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman might have cause a little commotion to Nylander, as the insider revealed on Sportsnet 650’s Halford and Brough in the Morning that Toronto did actually consider parting ways with Nylander this summer, though the Maple Leafs did not get the offer and price they were looking for…

“I think the Maple Leafs just decided [to keep him for this year]… I think they looked at trading him. I don’t think they liked what was out there,” Friedman said. “I mean, he did score 40 goals last year. He’s a really talented guy and in the playoffs, he was involved in a couple of their really successful moments against Tampa Bay. I think they know that and recognize that, they didn’t like what was out there [in the trade market].”

During his exit interview at the end of the season press conference earlier this spring, Nylander was adamant that he hopes to stay in Toronto, where he had his best season yet putting up 40 goals and 47 assists in 82 games.

However, the Maple Leafs may attempt to trade him while they can until they reach an agreement on an extension with the forward… He is reportedly seeking a new contract north of $10M in Toronto, however, it is obvious that the Maple Leafs can’t afford to sign another double-figure deal.

Let’s see if this all leads to more trade rumours…
